Civil is a department where a large variety of cases are filed. In the past, civil cases in Shawnee County have had a statewide and even a national impact on school finance, the sale of stocks and racial segregation.

Civil "CV" case types include: Contract, Damages, Eminent Domain, Malpractice, Mortgage Foreclosures, Name Changes, Small Claims Appeals, Torts and much more.

Civil "SL","SB", "ST" and "MV" case types include: Contractor's Liens, Condemned Property, Statutory Bonds, State Income Tax Warrants, County Property Tax Warrants, Federal Court Liens, and the Registration of Judgment Liens.

While most of the cases in Civil are filed by attorneys, some individuals choose to represent themselves. Court staff can give you basic information about cases, but cannot give you legal advice. Some forms and instructions are available, but due to the vast variety of cases that can be filed in this department, staff may not be able to provide the instruction that self-represented litigants desire.
